Type 4 Wickham Railcar

Text Box: The Type 4 Wickham was manufactured in England by D. Wickham and Co. Ltd.

The first prototype was brought out mid 1954. The first shipment arrived early 1955, the second later that year. Later Wickhams were assembled in Australia by Marine and Industrial Power P/L, Sydney.

Powered first by J.A. Prestwich (JAP). A crank start, 10Hp, Single cylinder, air cooled, dry sump, petrol engine. That drove a 2 speed, fwd and rev gear box. Many call it a diff but it is a solid drive.

By the late 70’s the JAP’s needed repair, parts were not longer available for the JAP. The Wickhams were then fitted with D12 Wisconsin engines. Electric start, 12Hp, single pot, air cooled, splash feed oil, petrol engine.

The last of them was replaced with Hi-Rail vehicles in the mid 1990’s

Type 4’s were not only in NSW. Other states also used them for narrow and broad gauge…..Click Here to go to “Trikes and Trolleys” for more information.

Worthy of a mention. This is what’s left of Wickham Railcar W&W N° 545 after a not so happy meeting with a freight train.
